Good morning HBRMS families, Well if this year has taught us anything we need to be flexible. With the rain we will move our Awards program to this afternoon at 1. Weather should be fine and allow parents to attend outdoors. We will also send a link to view remotely. Sorry for any inconvenience. Jeff

Cream Truck Info Since we can’t have our normal end-of-the-year celebrations and to thank the entire staff for their amazing work during a crazy year... The HBR PTO is bringing the Cream King Ice Cream Truck to the middle school on May 26th! (The truck will be at the school from 12:00-1:00. Rain or shine!) All staff and students will receive one ticket for an ice cream of their choice. (Attached is a picture you can peruse now to help make the tough decision!) If time allows: students, staff, and parents may purchase extra ice cream at just $2.50 per piece! If you have any questions, please contact Jenn Schlachter at 630-926-5704.

We have finalized our plans for our 8th grade promotion. It will be held Thursday May 27th 9:00 am in the HBRMS gym. Each student will be able to have 4 members of their family members attend. We will have 6th and 7th grade students watching the event remotely in classrooms. Seating for guests will be in our bleachers with a couple of rows of folding chairs in front of the bleachers. Of course MS siblings of 8th graders will be allowed to attend. We will share a broadcast link either Wednesday or Thursday morning for other family members. After the ceremony parents are free to take their students home or they may stay until our normal 11:55 dismissal time. Our 8th grade students who remain remote learning are welcome to join our celebration in-person please contact the office for further information on practice time Wednesday. Sports recognition and 6th and 7th grade academic awards celebration. May 26th 9:30 outside (weather permitting) on the west side of building. Parents are welcome to bring a chair and observe. Unfortunately if it rains and we have to move inside we would not have room for families but would broadcast it either way with a link to be shared via email with family members. This will also be a hotdog/hamburger day. All students will receive a free hotdog or hamburger meal during lunch. Students may pass and bring their own sack lunch if desired. The PTO has graciously set up an ice cream truck for our students and staff members... AWESOME even if it rains! Thank you, I appreciate all that you have done to make this year work and I know the staff and I are looking forward to a more normal 21 – 22. Any further questions let me know or please call our office. Jeff Strouss HBRMS

Candy Kickoff Event for Summer Reading The Kickoff event for the Big Rock Library 2021 Summer Reading is a Zoom presentation by Leslie Goddard on the History of Candy Making in Chicago. It will be on Wednesday, May 19 at 7 pm. This includes a lot of fun facts about developing various candies, how immigrants helped, and which candies are still available. Leslie Goddard has appeared in Big Rock several times where she has adopted a persona of Jackie Kennedy, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Amelia Earhart so you may have seen her in person. Since this is a Zoom event, you will need to email the library at info@bigrocklibrary.org so we can send you an invitation link to join the program. Be sure to email your request so you can join this sweet session on candy making. Summer reading registration begins at the library the day after this presentation. If you sign up, you will be receiving a goodie bag of historical candy (No, your candy pieces are not 100 years old! Yes, most of them were invented 100 years ago). Hope to see you on Zoom on May 19. Summer Reading at the Library What is the Big Rock Library summer reading program and how does it work? Summer reading at the library is a fun activity for reading or listening to books and getting rewarded for doing it. It’s very easy: 1. Starting May 20, come to the library to pick up a log sheet. Someone in your family will need a library card. If you don’t have one, a card can be purchased for $10. You will also receive a goodie bag of historical candies just for signing up. 2. Get your sheet to log in your reading or listening from May 20 through August 7. 3. Write the titles you read or hear on your log. Choose books that interest you. 4. Return to the library to collect your rewards after your complete each level. There is a wide variety of choices and drawings guaranteed to please. Both Hinckley Public Library and Big Rock Library have summer reading programs. We hope you’re able to participate in either one this season.
