Mr. Jay Brickman, Principal
"To handle yourself, use your head; to handle others, use your heart"-Eleanor Roosevelt
Thank you for taking the time to visit our website and the homepage for my office. I have the good fortune of now starting my 11th year as Principal of Hinckley-Big Rock High School. Since I first walked through these doors I have felt that HBR is special. I have come to learn that it truly is special, full of caring and capable people that create outstanding opportunities for our students to connect and excel. As times change, and our students come to us with an ever changing set of needs and experiences, I am proud to be part of a student-centered learning community that strives for excellence in serving students. This is another reminder of what an honor it is to serve as Principal of such a dynamic and successful organization.
As a professional learning community, Hinckley-Big Rock High School has so much going for it. Wonderful students, a supportive parent base, a knowledgeable and effective Superintendent, and a wise Board of Education. In many ways, this support makes my job easy. The complicating factors are the ever changing nature of public education and the challenge to not only meet the needs of all students, but the demands of our state and national governments as well. Despite the challenges posed by outside forces, please know that I am committed to leading the charge to help all of our students achieve to their maximum potential. My commitment to you is to continue to do my very best, and serve HBR with passion, pride, and with all of my heart.
I chose the quote above, from former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, because it is a great reminder that being "logical," or thinking with one's head is important; however, when it comes to leading others, helping others, and serving others one must think with the heart as well...and be compassionate. Our staff is a team. As such, our real strength is the ability to pool our individual talents toward a desired outcome and to see the job through to the end. That job is serving the students and community of Hinckley-Big Rock High School. So, while I approach my job logically, and use my head "to handle myself," I will never forget to use my heart when it comes to those I work with, and those I serve.
The H-BR community has entrusted me, along with the entire high school staff, to care for its children and help these young adults ready themselves for life after high school. Putting our time and attention on what works best to serve our students is my job. No words can express how seriously I take and accept this responsibility.
With that I say, on behalf of myself and the entire high school staff...
Welcome to the 2019-20 school year!
As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments.
